A Good Day
Pleasant as well as productive - unusual for me. The productive part actually started last night, when I invited my friend Anat over to check out the stuff I got at the baby shower. I needed someone else to coo over all the adorable baby clothes, and Tom just wasn’t in the mood to indulge me. Unfortunately she’s allergic to dogs, so she wasn’t going to be able to stay long - and I wanted to clean up the house in preparation. We had some pretty massive dog-fur-tumbleweeds happening (I think it’s shedding season, getting rid of the shortest hair to grow in fuller winter fur. Or maybe the beasts just can’t hold on to their fur.) and I figured those would make things worse.
So last night I started straightening up the piles of paper we had on the coffee table. Then I spent a good portion of the morning organizing and recycling old stuff, and vacuuming the living-room and kitchen. The only good thing about cleaning is how good it feels to have it done. Sometimes I think I’m having a bit of nesting urge - but then I let the clutter form again and figure not so much.
Anat came over just after lunch and we spent a good half hour or more commenting on the adorableness that is tiny baby clothes. It was really reassuring to chat with someone else who’s pregnant. We bonded over mutual worries (is s/he moving enough? is s/he big enough? are we eating/drinking the right stuff?) and various pregnancy-related irritations. Heartburn, back-aches, etc. She’s due in just a few weeks now - Dec 11. So close! I know I’m going to be freaking out when I’m that close.
Afterwords we headed out for dinner. A treat for me, since I helped edit some essays for her. I ate far too much, but everything was delicious. We went to Delfina’s pizzeria - a very hip pizza joint in the Mission. Unfortunately it wasn’t open for dinner yet when we arrived (4pm, super early) so we went to the hot bakery/coffeeshop next door and had an appetizer of hot chocolate and a piece of chocolate cake. At least we split the cake. It was dense and rich and delicious. I think Baby liked it too. Then we headed over to Delfina’s and had dinner. We split a tri-color salad, a pizza Margarita and a cannoli. But then I was a total dork and got another cannoli just for myself. I haven’t had one since undergrad in Massachusetts. I forgot how much I enjoy them. Everything was absolutely delicious. Anat is my foodie-friend. She knows all the hottest places to go, and the places with the best food. I’m going to have to hang out with her more often.
Tonight Tom and I finally went through our wedding pictures (yes, from over two years ago now) so I can send in the family’s order. Grandma has been bugging me about it for months, and I figure that I’d better get the pictures ordered soon. Because once the Baby’s born, no one’s going to care about Tom and I anymore. It’ll be all baby all the time. And that’s as it should be, I suppose. It was fun to look at the wedding pictures - we had such a great day. The ceremony was perfect for us - a mix of traditional and unique. The dinner was delicious. But the best part was the dancing. I wish we could have gone all night. It’s one of my favorite days ever. And I was lucky enough to be surrounded by people who love us.
In other news, while I was dozing this morning after Tom’s alarm went off we were cuddling as usual. And then Tom said, “I felt the baby move.” It was the first time he’d felt it. So cool to share that with him, finally.
