Baby’s First Pride

Me and Tai at Pride 08 Pride was this weekend and Tai had to be initiated in the San Francisco life.  I was too lazy to hit the Dyke March on Saturday, but we all managed to head out to the parade and fair on Sunday afternoon.  It was a great day.  The weather was pretty close to perfect - the sun managed to break through the layer of smoke that’s been over the city for days, but it wasn’t too hot even in the midst of everything.

This year was one of the best Pride’s I’ve been to - probably because so many people turned out to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage in California.    I’m pretty sure this was the most crowded Pride I’ve been to as well.  We only stuck around for an hour and a half or so before I got totally overwhelmed and needed to head out.  I’m lucky I listened to Tom and skipped the stroller in favor of the Bjorn.  Plus, it was nice to bask in the reflected glow of my baby.

Tai had a wonderful time.  He was quite the popular boy.  So many people stopped us to say hi to him or take his picture.  It was like traveling with a celebrity.  I almost didn’t want to let Tom carry him, because I had so much fun showing him off.  But my back was getting tired, so I had to share the glory.

He was awake for most of the time, but he crashed out toward the end.  Too much stimulation for a little guy.  But we plan on taking him back next year.  The verdict is still out as to whether or not we’ll hit Folsom Street.

Quick amusing story: A couple of nights ago Tai and I were in bed nursing just before we went to sleep.  Tom was getting ready, so he didn’t get in bed until Tai was part way through.  When Tom sat down, Tai looked up from the boob, right at Tom and started crying.  I coaxed him back to the breast and he calmed right down.  A couple of seconds later, he looked over at Tom again and started crying.  This happened several times in a row.  It cracked me up.  It was like he was saying, “Dad, no interrupting us!  I want it to be just me and Momma.”

Of course he wasn’t.  He was just trying to look over at Dad and nurse at exactly the same time, and when he couldn’t he got frustrated.  But it still makes me giggle.

Unfortunately, Tom got sick on Sunday night and stayed home from work today.  He’s got some cold/flu thing.  So we’re probably going to be having Tai’s first illness in the next few days or so.  I’m getting a sore throat myself.  But I’m hoping that Tai will benefit from the antibodies in my breastmilk and shake the cold much more quickly than Tom has.  If it were my choice, of course, I’d keep Tai from getting sick at all.  I wish I could protect him, even from little things like that.
